New Scarborough Sign Unveiled at EAST H.E.A.R.T. Mural Launch Event!

On Saturday, June 26th, 2023, Scarborough Arts’ 2SLGBTQ+ youth program participants unveiled the new Scarborough Sign at the EAST H.E.A.R.T. Mural Launch Event!

The event was kicked off with a featured DJ performance by @supremewreck, with tons of free food (catered by Aleppo Kebab), resources, and swag!

Led by artist, @jaredoslever, and EAST H.E.A.R.T. leaders Jega Delisca (Youth Coordinator), Sky Ffrench (Peer Mentor), and Rainée Nelson (Peer Mentor), youth participants conceptualized and painted a new design as part of their culminating project.

Titled “Things that Go Bump in the Nightthis captivating artwork embraces the horror genre to celebrate Scarborough's 2SLGBTQ+ community. Through evocative imagery and mesmerizing aesthetics, the mural challenges stereotypes and empowers individuals as resilient, captivating monsters. With bold strokes, vibrant colors, and haunting symbolism, it invites viewers to embrace the diverse and powerful nature of the community. The artwork serves as a compelling reminder of the struggles faced by queer individuals in Scarborough, while also highlighting their strength and resilience. It ignites a conversation about the role of public art in provoking thought, fostering community, and celebrating the unique spirits that dwell within us all.

The new sign can be viewed at @feedscarborough Clairlea Food Bank (772 Warden Ave.)

Thank you to our gracious hosts at Feed Scarborough, our wonderful volunteers, photographer Vonny Lorde for capturing this even so beautifully, and everyone who celebrated with us! Thank you, also, to MP Bill Blair, MP Shaun Chen, and Councillor Jamaal Myers for attending our Mural Launch event.

This program, funded by the City of Toronto, Toronto Urban Health Fund, and Delta Bingo and Gaming, is a yearly program for 2SLGBTQ+ Scarborough-based youth to gain social and creative support through art, health, and wellness.
