Check out: the TBMT blog and this great video of the first few workshops!

One local community organization from each of Scarborough’s six priority neighbourhoods plays host to an intense, week-long series of mobile music recording workshops. Each workshop allows 10 youth to collaborate on the creation of original hip-hop tracks. Participants explore the writing, recording, production, and performance phases of an original album. The program culminates in the creation of a professionally produced album and digital .mp3 files. The Borough Most Thorough participants gain first hand recording experience, and are free to use their final album to promote themselves and their artform. The recording is free to be shared and distributed by its creators, fueling future musical endeavours without traditional music industry parameters.

The Borough Most Thorough 2010 creates a forum in which it is possible for Scarborough youth to directly develop important life skills, while networking in a safe environment and collaborating with likeminded individuals.

This summer, SAC is participating in a project is to transform the Kingston-Galloway/Orton Park bridge (back) into a connector that brings residents from diverse communities together. The project will act as a catalyst for the transformation of this barrier into the metaphorical “bridge” that it should be within the KGO community. Through collaboration with our partners, we will create art interventions that will break down barriers and make connections to help change this perception.

The project is comprised of several components:

Launch Event – Community Arts Celebration (June 24, 2010) featured a parade coordinated by Jumblies Theatre and chalk drawings on the bridge by artists and community members.

Free Dance Workshops (August 17 – September 9, 2010) Led by Kevin Ormsby at East Scarborough Storefront, Tuesdays & Thursdays. Email Ben at programs@scarborougharts.com to register.

ROOTS/ROUTES Bridge Art Project (July 5 – September 11, 2010.): Tracks and traces of the flora and fauna of the parkland below the bridge will be represented through painted images and interspersed with the footprints and impressions of people and pets of the community. Symbolically, these elements will represent the routes travelled by people and animals, and the roots and flora of the natural environment found in the area.

SUBTEXT: sub-Urban Arts Festival (September 10 – 12, 2010) is a dynamic, three day multi-arts festival, preceded by workshops; featuring graffiti and performing art, storytelling and oral history, modern batik art demonstrations, film screening and an introduction to the natural ravine area where the festival will take place. On September 11th, crowds will be treated to The Borough Most Thorough CD release and listening party. The festival is the culminating event and celebration of the summer long Bridging Project, and links the above-bridge art interventions with the natural environment below. It will draw upon the creative energies and organizational network of contacts that the Bridging Project has successfully employed.

Documentation and Film: The Bridging project will be documented with photos and video which will be compiled into a documentary style video. This final video will be screened during the SUBTEXT event and posted on YouTube and other digital media.

The Bridging Project will engage professional artists to work with youth and volunteers on a variety of art projects that will provide inspiration and education for the participants and leave a legacy for the community. Professional artists will lead the artistic process, providing mentoring to youth and community members. The community will be invited to provide input and ideas around themes of the environment, and will help to develop artistic content for the intervention.

Artistic Goals:

To create a vibrant community art intervention that will help to eliminate the negative perception of the bridge;

To explore connections between the community and the natural environment below the bridge through a variety of art forms;

To unlock artistic potential and tap into the undiscovered creative culture of the community;

To provide opportunities and an exciting venue for graffiti artists to demonstrate and showcase their talents;

To engage artists and community members to revitalize re-invent, re-introduce and reclaim the bridge as a part of their community.

Key collaborators are: Mural Routes, Jumblies Theatre, Toronto Cultural Services – Arts Services, Scarborough Arts Council, The Amazing Place, East Scarborough Storefront, Scarborough Historical Museum, Evergreen and the community of KGO.

Creative Mosaics, a new collaborative project involving seven organizations, will set out to identify and respond to the needs of newcomers and culturally-diverse communities with the goal of developing an intergenerational, youth-focused arts program.

Scarborough contains some of the most diverse neighbourhoods in Canada, yet it remains under-served in providing arts and cultural programs, services and opportunities to newcomers, youth and culturally-diverse communities.

Creative Mosaics will involve a comprehensive community needs and capacity building assessment in order to develop a proposal for an arts program that integrates after-school, mentorship and intergenerational components, providing learning opportunities in the arts and an exploration of diverse cultural identities.

The Creative Mosaics collaborative includes Scarborough Arts Council, Catholic Cross-Cultural Services, Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts and Culture, Arising Women, Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI) and Philippine Advocacy Through Arts and Culture.

Creative Mosaics will include engagement with youth, mentors, artists and cultural leaders, organization of community discussions and focus groups, distribution and collection of surveys, outreach, exploration and development of arts program models and writing of the final report.
