Creative Mosaics
Creative Mosaics: Mentoring in Community Arts & Cultures – A Needs & Capacity Assessment is a collaborative project created to respond to the lack of culturally inclusive arts programming available for newcomers, youth and culturally diverse communities. A needs and capacity building assessment is currently being conducted engaging children, youth, community members, artists and cultural leaders through community discussions, focus groups, surveys and outreach.
The Purpose of the project is to:
1) Develop arts and cultural programming in five elementary school communities in the Scarborough area for children and to work with professional artists and intergenerational mentors to explore and share diverse cultural experiences through various art forms such as storytelling, music, dance and visual art.
2) Identify good practices in intergenerational and mentoring practices.
3) Identify the interest in and need for culturally diverse arts programs.
4) Identify barriers to involvement or participation by specific cultural communities.
5) Explore how we can better support professional and emerging artists from culturally diverse communities.
Partners: Scarborough Arts Council (SAC), The Ontario Trillium Foundation, Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, Catholic Cross Cultural Services (CCCS), Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI), Arising Women, Kapisanan Philippine Centre for the Arts and Culture, Philippine Advocacy Through Arts and Culture (PATAC), Culture and Cultural Pluralism in Performing Arts Movement Ontario (CPPAMO) and participating schools.
Scarborough C.A.R.E.S.
Scarborough C.A.R.E.S. (Community, Art, Recreation and Education Services) project is a fully mobile, after-school program for youth ages 6 to 12 provided with no cost to the parent or hosting school. Outfitted with a collection of digital equipment, from cameras, tri-pods, laptops and engaging software programs, C.A.R.E.S encourages the “middle years” to get hands on with technology, teaching them useful skills and tapping into their creativity.
Launched in late 2007, the program is collaboration between Scarborough Arts Council, N.Y.A.D. (Not Your Average Daycare), East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club, West Scarborough Boys and Girls Club, Children’s Aid Society of Toronto and other organizations across the city. All working together with their respective expertise in their field, these organizations bring together a well-planned and executed program that addresses the many requirements for a fully engaging initiative. C.A.R.E.S seeks to enrich children’s skills through digital arts media and creative recreation.
The program is made possible through multi-year funding from The Ontario Trillium Foundation.
