(Community, Art, Recreation and Education Services) project is a fully mobile, after-school program for youth ages 6 to 12 provided with no cost to the parent or hosting school. Outfitted with a collection of digital equipment, from cameras, tri-pods, laptops and engaging software programs, C.A.R.E.S encourages the “middle years” to get hands on with technology, teaching them useful skills and tapping into their creativity.

Launched in late 2007, the program is collaboration between Scarborough Arts Council, N.Y.A.D. (Not Your Average Daycare), East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club, West Scarborough Boys and Girls Club, Children’s Aid Society of Toronto and other organizations across the city. All working together with their respective expertise in their field, these organizations bring together a well-planned and executed program that addresses the many requirements for a fully engaging initiative. C.A.R.E.S seeks to enrich children’s skills through digital arts media and creative recreation.

The program is made possible through multi-year funding from The Ontario Trillium Foundation.

The New Art of Suburbia – Podcast & Video Launch

The New Art of Suburbia – Video & Podcast

Once seen as quiet bedroom communities far from the noise of the urban core, Toronto’s inner suburbs have become centres of activity – culturally vibrant, diverse and ever changing.

The New Art of Suburbia, a two-evening panel discussion and forum recorded for podcast, addressed these changes and implications for the arts and culture.

Dealing with changes in the development and urban fabric of Toronto, speakers from a variety of backgrounds tackle pressing questions:

  • What is the nature and role of creative communities in the suburbs?
  • How can we better understand and support arts and cultural activities in the suburbs?
  • How can we create and support a vibrant arts scene in suburban communities?

The New Art of Suburbia is a joint venture of Scarborough Arts Council, The Centre for Creative Communications, Centennial College and the School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culture, Centennial College. Spacing Magazine is the media partner for the series.

JUMP Youth Scholarship Awards for Art

January 9 – February 17, 2009

Our 10th annual youth scholarship program provided talented youth in Scarborough and east Toronto with the opportunity to build vital career skills, while helping SAC to foster relationships with community schools, teachers and students. Students from grades 9-12 in east end Toronto schools were invited to submit their artwork for review by a professional juror.

JUMP is designed as an experiential learning opportunity, requiring students to supply an artist statement, curriculum vitae and portfolio. Those selected are coached on how to present their work for hanging. By setting professional standards, the competition helps to prepare young artists for applications to post-secondary institutions, galleries and granting bodies. For 2009, SAC offered the inaugural Andrew Nikolics Memorial Award in memory of artist Andrew Nikolics.

In celebration of Black History Month, a selection of the work produced by these youth was on display at the Scarborough Civic Centre Rotunda from February 17th to 28th , 2009. The work was created by youth of Blessed Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School, Military Trail Public School, and Willow Park Junior Public School.

The SAC Annual Juried Art Exhibition is open to artists across the country working in all media. For the Scarborough Arts Council Annual Juried Art Exhibition 2009, SAC asked artists to explore the theme of “Art Needs.” We need art, but what does art need? What can you as an artist bring to the art world? Artists were encouraged to use their unique perspective as an artist and encourage viewers to consider a new way of thinking about art. Artists working in all media were invited to submit their work for Art Needs. Scarborough Arts Council was honoured to again be partnering with the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto for the exhibition.
