𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲: 2 hour sessions, 2-4PM
𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: East Scarborough Storefront, 4040 Lawrence Ave E, Scarborough, ON, M1E 2R6

Intro to South Asian Embroidery
Instructor Khadija Aziz is back with 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘆, presented by Scarborough Arts and Workman Arts.
This beginner-friendly course will explore five traditional South Asian embroidery techniques, their histories, and traditions.
Over the course of six weeks, we will learn about Kantha, Phulkari, Sozni, Chikankari, and Shisha. Each class will begin with a slideshow on a technique and its history, including who made the embroidery, when it was made, and why.
To understand the technical skills required for each embroidery style, participants will first recreate traditional motifs associated with that technique.
Then, participants will be invited and guided to create their own motifs, hand-drawn imagery, geometric patterns, or abstract compositions.
They will transfer them onto fabric to create their own contemporary interpretation of South Asian embroidery styles.

Collection in Conversation with the Doris McCarthy Gallery
'Collection in Conversation' with the Doris McCarthy Gallery is returning to the University of Toronto Scarborough Library Monday, January 19! Scarborough Arts' very own Faith Rajasingham will be joining Mariam Magsi in a conversation exploring what it means to subvert the colonial history of photography, build an authentic art practice, and carve out careers as artists and educators whose practices are rooted in storytelling, integrity, and community.
The ongoing 'Collection in Conversation' series, presented in partnership with the U of T Scarborough Library, invites artists with works in the Doris McCarthy Gallery Collection to discuss their practice with other contemporary artists, writers, activists, and professionals.
Mariam Magsi’s work, 'Kabilay Ki Baiti (Daughter of the Tribe)', was acquired by the Doris McCarthy Gallery in 2022 and is installed in the U of T Scarborough Library.
Mariam Magsi (she/they) is a Karachi-born, Toronto-based artist, writer, and educator whose practice spans photography, video, performance, poetry, and installation art, grounded in decolonial, feminist frameworks. Rooted in Baloch-Punjabi heritage, Mariam's multidisciplinary practice draws on tribal/cultural textiles + paraphernalia, photographic archives, food, and orally transferred intergenerational histories to examine how identity, gender, power, and migration are shaped and contested within public and private life.
Faith Rajasingham is the Manager of Programs and Services at Scarborough Arts. She is a museum professional with a background in Canadian immigration history and community education, whose research and work aims to provide resources and services for racialized and/or marginalized IBPOC communities in Toronto.
