Alexander Robinson

My artistic journey began in the world of illustration and book design in China, where I created stories for children and learned to translate imagination into form. Over several decades, my practice was shaped by the discipline of print media and the rhythms of publishing—lines, textures, and repetition became my language.

Since immigrating to Canada, I have found myself returning to creative writing and drawing in new ways and sites. My work has shifted from printed media to moving images, animation, and participatory art that connects the community with shared memory.

When I revisit my older works, I see both precision and restraint. They reflect a past self who valued slow making. Today, I am learning to let the line breathe, to let accidents and emotions enter the work. I see my practice as a continuous translation between cultures, media, and generations. Every drawing, print, and gesture becomes a small record of transformation, a reminder that we are all works in progress.
