In the Industry: Curatorial Talk with Sandy Saad + Networking for Artists & Creatives

In the Industry is a Scarborough Arts program series that provides emerging artists and creatives with opportunities to explore career possibilities, learn from arts professionals, and build relationships within the Scarborough arts community. Through a series of sessions with professionals across the arts and cultural sectors, participants can gain insight into different career paths, exchange ideas, and connect with peers.

Kicking off this season of In the Industry, Scarborough Arts is partnering with the Doris McCarthy Gallery where curator Sandy Saad will lead a tour of the exhibition Cartographies of Longing, discussing her curatorial practice and career journey.

Following the tour, Scarborough artists Erika DeFreitas and Kwame Delfish will join Saad for a networking session. Over food and refreshments, all three will be available to engage with and answer questions from participants, offering informal mentorship and sharing their experiences. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet and talk with each other and to expand their own network of peers.

About the Curator and the Artists:

Sandy Saad is an Egyptian Canadian curator raised in Scarborough whose practice is rooted in collaboration, care, and public dialogue. With over 15 years of experience across museums, galleries, and cultural institutions, her work expands the ways audiences encounter contemporary art through accessible, imaginative, and critically engaged exhibition-making. She holds a Master of Visual Studies from the University of Toronto and is currently Curator at the Doris McCarthy Gallery at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Her curatorial practice champions emerging and established artists while fostering meaningful connections between artists, audiences, and the communities she serves.

Erika DeFreitas is an interdisciplinary artist with a Master of Visual Studies from the University of Toronto. DeFreitas’ practice includes performance, photography, video, installation, textiles, drawing and writing. Placing emphasis on gesture, process, the body, documentation and paranormal phenomena, DeFreitas mines concepts of loss, post-memory, legacy and objecthood. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Kwame Delfish is a Scarborough-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice centres on amplifying overlooked and untold narratives. Working independently and through his creative agency, The Blak Brush, he engages a range of mediums, including artistic direction, storytelling, painting, hairstyling, and graphic design. His work explores the intersections of culture, identity, and community, fostering dialogue and transformative engagement.
