South Asian Embroidery with Khadija Aziz
Join us for another edition of Khadija Aziz’s course “South Asian Embroidery” this fall season.
This beginner-friendly course will explore four traditional South Asian embroidery techniques, their histories, and traditions. Over the course of six weeks, we will learn about Kantha, Phulkari, Chikankari, and Shisha. Each class will begin with a slideshow on a technique and its history.
To understand the technical skills required for each embroidery style, participants will first recreate traditional motifs associated with that technique. Then, participants will be invited and guided to create their own motifs, hand-drawn imagery, geometric patterns, or abstract compositions. They will transfer them onto fabric to create their own contemporary interpretation of South Asian embroidery styles.
Date and time: 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM every Saturday from September 5th - October 10th
Location: West Scarborough Neighbourhood Community Centre, Youth Lounge (313 Pharmacy Ave, Scarborough, ON M1L 3E7)
