A #ScarboroughSpotlight on Shamika Pierre

Holiday Card, by Shamika Pierre

This month, we’re pleased to feature Shamika Pierre, a Scarborough-based visual artist, as our Scarborough Spotlight.

As a Black Caribbean woman, Shamika’s work is an outlook of the Black experiences that she lived and shared with her community, culture, and personal heritage.

Shamika Pierre is a Scarborough-based visual artist who recently graduated with a BFA in Illustration at Ontario College Of Arts and Design.

She looks at the places, interactions, and stories left unseen and reflects them through her own lens. Her process is intuitive; she tries to bring these perspectives as humanely as she can.

“What inspires me about Scarborough is the amount of texture it'll show you. Through our communities and neighbourhoods, the individual people you meet, the amount of culture, and how nature informs its surroundings. All of these become woven into a place I am proud to be in.”

“I am deep into research and exploring what it means to be Haitian through themes of migration, identity, and cultural continuity. I am excited to share something that shows the resilience of my culture outside of its preconception, while also creating a space for a wider immigrant community outside my own to engage with and relate to it.”
